Detective Hae-joon (Park Hae-il) takes the case — meticulous, sleep-starved, used to filing every death neatly away. His prime suspect is the dead man's widow, a Chinese immigrant named Seo-rae (Tang Wei), who stays unnervingly calm. He puts her under surveillance, replays her gestures and silences frame by frame, listens to her through the night — and instead of evidence he finds longing. The closer he gets to the truth, the less he wants to know it.

Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, The Handmaiden) builds a thriller almost without thrills, where the tension lives in glances, reflections and things left unsaid. The film won him Best Director at Cannes and became South Korea's Oscar submission.
