Synopsis

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) is a Korean crime drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Park Chan-wook. A deaf-mute factory worker turns to kidnapping to save his dying sister and sets off a chain no one can stop.

Ryu loses his job right when his sister needs a kidney transplant he cannot pay for. Cheated by black-market organ dealers, he lets his radical girlfriend Yeong-mi talk him into a desperate scheme: snatch the young daughter of his former boss, Park, and live on the ransom. The plan unravels almost at once. The child dies, the sister dies, and a hollowed-out Park, played by Song Kang-ho, begins a hunt of his own. Everyone here believes they are in the right, and everyone pays in blood.

This is the opening film of Park Chan-wook's so-called Vengeance Trilogy, made before Oldboy. The director keeps a near-documentary chill: long silences, sparse sound, brutality with no music to soften it. A hard 129 minutes on how justice curdles into an endless tally.
