Synopsis

The Offence (1973) is a British-American psychological thriller directed by Sidney Lumet — watch it online on iFILM. Sean Connery plays Detective Sergeant Johnson, a twenty-year veteran of the force who has processed every variety of human cruelty the job can produce. During one interrogation of a suspected child molester, something breaks. The suspect ends up dead. Johnson's hands did it.

The film is less interested in the crime than in what made it possible. Superintendent Cartwright, played by Trevor Howard, sits across from Johnson and starts pulling at threads the detective has spent years burying. Ian Bannen as the suspect delivers a performance that keeps you from settling into easy judgments. Lumet shoots it in tight, suffocating close-ups — no room to look away.

Connery produced the film himself, deliberately choosing a role that had nothing to do with glamour or action. 113 minutes of controlled, claustrophobic cinema. Stream The Offence online on iFILM.
