Serpico

Frank Serpico joins the force believing a cop is there to protect people. The reality hits fast: payoffs run from the beat officers all the way up, and the only safe move is to take your cut and stay quiet. Frank won't. Year after year he hands the envelopes back, grows out his hair, drifts through the city's bohemian corners, and keeps knocking on the doors of bosses who would rather not hear him. The louder he gets, the more dangerous it becomes to answer a call with backup he can no longer trust.

The story comes from the real detective Frank Serpico, whose testimony helped trigger the Knapp Commission and expose graft across the NYPD. Lumet shot it out on the actual streets, stripped of polish, and that grimy texture keeps the film alive decades later. The part earned Pacino his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.
