Synopsis

Long Day's Journey Into Night (1962) is Sidney Lumet's film adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play — watch it online on iFILM. At 170 minutes with four actors and a single Connecticut summer house, it is one of the most demanding ensemble pieces in American cinema.

The Tyrone family has gathered for August. James, the patriarch, was once a celebrated stage actor — now he counts pennies and refuses to pay doctors. His wife Mary has relapsed into morphine addiction after what everyone hoped was the last time. Their older son Jamie drinks methodically and without apology. The younger, Edmund, is ill with something no one wants to say out loud. Over the course of one day, every wound the family has kept politely closed gets torn open.

Katharine Hepburn won the Best Actress prize at Cannes for her performance here. Ralph Richardson, Jason Robards, and Dean Stockwell match her step for step. Lumet's direction is deliberately unshowy — he understood that O'Neill's dialogue needed room to land, not camera movement to distract from it.
