Red Miller (Nicolas Cage) and artist Mandy (Andrea Riseborough) keep to a cabin among the pines. A wandering cult led by a deranged preacher named Jeremiah tears that peace apart. When the sect takes everything Red has, the soft-spoken woodsman forges his own axe and goes hunting. What follows is blood, fire and a hallucinatory descent where latex-clad bikers prove scarier than any demon.

Cosmatos shoots this less like an action film and more like a trance: crimson and acid-green light, a slow churning pace, and the final score by Jóhann Jóhannsson.
