Synopsis
Psycho (1960) is Alfred Hitchcock's genre-redefining thriller — watch it online on iFILM. Janet Leigh plays Marion Crane, a Phoenix real estate secretary who on one ordinary Friday afternoon pockets $40,000 of client money and points her car toward California. She pulls off the highway in a rainstorm and checks into the Bates Motel, run by a polite, slightly awkward young man named Norman (Anthony Perkins) who clearly adores his mother.
Mother has strong feelings about guests. That detail is everything. Hitchcock shot the film for roughly $800,000 of his own money, deliberately using the TV crew from Alfred Hitchcock Presents rather than his usual studio team — a calculated move to keep costs low and expectations off-balance. Cinematographer John L. Russell built a black-and-white frame where every shadow does narrative work. Bernard Herrmann composed the score: those stabbing strings are practically a character on their own.
The film ran in theatres for over a year and earned back thirty times its budget, landing four Academy Award nominations. Director Joseph Kosinski, Martin Scorsese, and Quentin Tarantino have each named it a foundational influence. Stream Psycho (1960) in full online on iFILM.
