Synopsis

The Elephant Man (1980) is David Lynch's haunting drama, free to watch online on iFILM. In Victorian London, surgeon Frederick Treves spots a disfigured man hidden under a hood in a grimy carnival sideshow and pays to take him away from his brutal handler.

The man is John Merrick, drawn from the real Joseph Merrick, whose body has been so warped by disease that strangers recoil at the sight of him. John Hurt plays him buried under hours of makeup; Anthony Hopkins plays the doctor who slowly discovers that beneath the deformity lives someone gentle, well-read, able to recite scripture from memory. London society turns Merrick into a fashionable curiosity, and Treves starts to wonder whether he is rescuing the man or merely exhibiting him in a nicer cage.

Lynch shot the film in stark black and white, letting the clang and hiss of the industrial city press in like a second character. It earned eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and its makeup was so striking that the Academy created a dedicated award for it afterward. A quiet, devastating study of dignity that owes nothing to a person's face. Stream The Elephant Man (1980) online on iFILM.
