Synopsis

The Tenant (Le locataire, 1976) is Roman Polanski's psychological thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Trelkovsky, a meek office clerk, rents a flat in an aging Paris building. The previous tenant threw herself from the window and is still clinging to life in a hospital bed.

The neighbors flinch at the smallest noise, the concierge watches everything, the landlord demands silence. Slowly Trelkovsky becomes convinced the whole house is conspiring to turn him into that dead woman — they leave him her things, the café serves her brand of cigarettes, and the mirror across the courtyard shows a life that isn't his. Polanski plays the lead himself, and his frightened, slowly dissolving face carries the film. Isabelle Adjani is Stella, the one person who seems to be on his side.

This closes the director's so-called apartment trilogy after Repulsion and Rosemary's Baby, adapted from Roland Topor's novel. It's shot so the line between persecution and madness blurs right up to the final image, and the ending recasts everything you've watched. Stream The Tenant (1976) online on iFILM.
