Synopsis
Friday Night Lights (2004) is a sports drama from director Peter Berg you can watch online on iFILM. Billy Bob Thornton leads a story drawn from Buzz Bissinger's nonfiction book about one Texas town and its football team.
The setting is Odessa, a flat oil town in the late 1980s. People here live for one night a week, when the Permian Panthers take the field and the whole place seems to hold its breath. For the players, football is the one ticket out, away from the rigs and the dead-end jobs. Coach Gary Gaines is pushing them toward the state championship. Then star tailback Boobie Miles blows out his knee in the opening game, and the dream starts to come apart.
Berg shoots it almost like a documentary, all handheld cameras, real stadiums and no gloss. The score by Explosions in the Sky carries much of the ache. Watch for Garrett Hedlund, Derek Luke and a very young Amber Heard in supporting roles. If you like honest stories about sport and growing up, stream Friday Night Lights online on iFILM.
