Chief electronics technician Mike Williams (Mark Wahlberg) flies out for a routine shift. Rig boss Jimmy Harrell (Kurt Russell) clashes with a company man (John Malkovich) who wants the drilling sped up and the safety checks cut short. The pressure tests come back bad. Nobody listens. Then mud and gas roar up the well, and a wall of fire climbs over the water. Gina Rodriguez, Dylan O'Brien and Kate Hudson round out the crew.

Drawn from survivor testimony, the film skips the abstract spill statistics and stays with the workers fighting to get off a burning platform minute by minute.
