Synopsis

The Snowman (1982) is a British animated short you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Dianne Jackson and drawn from Raymond Briggs' wordless picture book, the film runs just 26 minutes and contains not a single line of dialogue — only hand-drawn images and a quiet orchestral score.

On Christmas Eve, a boy builds a snowman in the garden. At midnight, the figure steps off its patch of snow and knocks on the front door. What follows is a flight over the English countryside, across the Channel, and all the way to the North Pole, where snowmen from every corner of the world have gathered and Father Christmas himself is the host. By morning, only a scarf is left on the frozen ground.

Broadcast on Channel 4, the film became a permanent fixture of the British Christmas season. One well-known version opens with a young David Bowie recalling that winter and pulling the very same scarf from an attic box. The story needs no words — it works for any age, any country. Watch The Snowman online on iFILM this holiday season, or any time you need twenty-six minutes of something quietly wonderful.
