Synopsis
Klaus (2019) is a hand-drawn animated film you can watch online on iFILM. A spoiled postman named Jesper is shipped off to Smeerensburg, a frozen island town where two clans have been feuding for generations.
To earn his way back home, Jesper has to mail six thousand letters. It looks hopeless: the locals would rather brawl than write. Then he stumbles onto the cabin of Klaus, a gruff old recluse who carves wooden toys. One delivery to a single child sets off a chain of small kindnesses, and before long the town's children are flooding the post office with letters while the grown-ups' grudges start to thaw. The voice cast features Jason Schwartzman, J.K. Simmons, Rashida Jones and Joan Cusack.
This was the directing debut of Sergio Pablos, the artist who first dreamed up Despicable Me. He pushed for traditional 2D animation lit with volumetric shading instead of CGI, and the result won the BAFTA for Best Animated Film. A warm origin story for the Santa legend.
