Synopsis

Rakka (2017) is a Canadian sci-fi short directed by Neill Blomkamp — watch it online on iFILM. Produced by Oats Studios, the film runs 22 minutes and drops the viewer into a world where humanity has already lost the first round: reptilian aliens have landed, reshaped the atmosphere, and begun using human bodies as incubators for their own biology.

Sigourney Weaver narrates as a survivor piecing together what happened. On the ground, a small cell of resistance fighters — led by a battle-worn man played by Eugene Hümbanjwa — scrapes by in underground shelters, launching raids with almost no resources and even less optimism. The aliens aren't presented as a riddle to be solved; they're simply dominant, and the film doesn't flinch from showing what that means for the people caught underneath.

Blomkamp released Rakka as the opening entry in the Oats Studios Vol. 1 anthology, pushing it directly to YouTube as a free experiment in crowd-funded genre filmmaking. Brutal visuals, minimal exposition. Stream Rakka (2017) online on iFILM.
