The Zone of Interest

The Zone of Interest (2023) is Jonathan Glazer's drama you can watch online on iFILM. Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss builds a tidy family idyll right against the camp wall.

Höss (Christian Friedel) has a handsome house, a flowering garden, a swimming pool and five children. His wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller) tends her greenhouse, shows off a new fur coat, and dreams of staying here forever. The catch sits just past the fence — the death camp itself. The camera almost never looks over the wall. But you hear everything: the low roar of the furnaces, distant gunshots, screams. Glazer films indifference rather than atrocity, and that lands harder than any direct image.

This British-Polish-American film was made with the Auschwitz-Birkenau museum, shot in cold, watchful frames over Mica Levi's unsettling sound design. It took two Academy Awards, for Best International Feature and Best Sound. Stream The Zone of Interest (2023) online on iFILM.
