Synopsis

The Search (1948) is a Swiss-American war drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Fred Zinnemann and starring Montgomery Clift and nine-year-old Ivan Jandl in a performance that won him a special Academy Award.

The story unfolds in the rubble of occupied Germany, one year after the end of the war. A boy who survived Auschwitz wanders the ruins alone, old enough to know that uniforms mean danger, too young to trust anyone enough to say his own name. American GI Ralph Stevenson finds him, feeds him, slowly earns his trust. Meanwhile, in the same broken country, the boy's mother moves from one displaced-persons camp to the next, working through lists of names that keep ending before hers does.

Zinnemann filmed on location among the actual ruins of Nuremberg and Munich, giving the picture a documentary weight that studio sets couldn't fake. The film won an Oscar for Best Writing and remains one of the quieter, more honest accounts of what displacement looked like at ground level. Stream The Search (1948) online on iFILM.
