Synopsis

Alone in Berlin (2016) — watch online this quiet wartime drama directed by Vincent Perez, starring Emma Thompson and Brendan Gleeson, a German-French-British production running 103 minutes.

It is the summer of 1940, and a letter arrives at the Quangel apartment in Berlin: their son is dead, killed somewhere on the western front. Otto and Anna, a working-class couple who had gone along with the regime like most of their neighbours, reach a breaking point. They start writing postcards — short, plain statements about the war, the lies, the cost — and leave them in apartment building stairwells around the city. It is a tiny act. Almost invisible in scale. But the Gestapo treats it as a serious threat, and Daniel Brühl plays the detective ordered to track them down before the cards spread further.

The film draws on the real story of the Quangels, documented after the war by Hans Fallada in his novel Every Man Dies Alone, written in just 24 days from the original Gestapo files. Stream Alone in Berlin online on iFILM — a drama about two ordinary people who chose honesty in a city where it could get you killed.
