Synopsis
The Thief of Bagdad (1924) is a silent fantasy adventure you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Raoul Walsh for United Artists, with Douglas Fairbanks in the lead role he also co-produced — one of the defining performances of the silent era.
A charming street thief falls for the Caliph's daughter and strikes a deal: bring the greatest treasure in existence within seven months and the princess is his. The quest takes him through underwater kingdoms, enchanted forests and battles with creatures out of Arabian mythology. Standing in his way is a scheming Mongol prince played by Sôjin Kamiyama — a man with his own designs on the throne.
"Happiness must be earned," reads the film's title card. The sets, built on a massive backlot, and the practical effects of 1924 still hold their own on screen. Stream The Thief of Bagdad online on iFILM — a landmark of early Hollywood spectacle cinema.
