Synopsis
The Thief of Bagdad (1940) is a British-American fantasy adventure you can watch online on iFILM, produced by Alexander Korda and directed by Ludwig Berger, Michael Powell, and Tim Whelan. It remains one of the most visually spectacular films of its era.
Young King Ahmad is tricked by his scheming vizier Jaffar — played with icy menace by Conrad Veidt — stripped of his sight and his throne. His unlikely ally is Abu, a quick-fingered street thief brought to life by Sabu with infectious energy. Their quest to reclaim the kingdom and win back a princess takes them through flying horses, giant spiders, and genies trapped in bottles on ocean floors. Magic here is genuinely threatening, not decorative.
The film took home three Academy Awards — for cinematography, art direction, and special effects — and its Technicolor photography still holds up as some of the richest ever committed to film. Stream The Thief of Bagdad (1940) online on iFILM.
