Godzilla Minus One

Godzilla Minus One (2023) is the Japanese sci-fi monster film you can watch online on iFILM. A nation already flattened by war meets a creature that does not care who lost or won.

Koichi Shikishima, a former kamikaze pilot who couldn't go through with his mission, comes home alive and ashamed. Ryunosuke Kamiki plays him; Minami Hamabe is Noriko, a woman who lands on his doorstep carrying an orphaned baby she saved during an air raid. After nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll wake the giant lizard and send it toward Tokyo Bay, a handful of civilians with one patched-up wooden boat and no army behind them have to figure out how to stop something bigger than any battleship.

Director Takashi Yamazaki also ran the visual effects, and on a budget under fifteen million dollars the picture took the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, a first for the seventy-year-old franchise.
