Synopsis

Ultranationalist rebels seize a Russian missile base and threaten a nuclear launch. The USS Alabama dives with orders to fire a preemptive strike the moment confirmation arrives. Then a transmission cuts out mid-message. Captain Ramsey (Hackman) reads the orders as valid and wants the missiles away. His XO, Lt. Cmdr. Hunter (Washington), refuses to end the world over a half-received signal. Their clash inside a steel tube becomes a standoff over who commands the boat.
The script got an uncredited polish from Quentin Tarantino. One hundred twenty-three minutes of confined space where the tension comes from voices and protocol, not explosions.
