Synopsis

The Lady Vanishes (1938) is Alfred Hitchcock's mystery thriller you can watch online on iFILM. On a train leaving a made-up Alpine country, an elderly passenger disappears without a trace, and everyone else swears she was never aboard.

Young Englishwoman Iris meets the kindly Miss Froy at a snowbound hotel. Once the train rolls again, Iris blacks out, and when she comes round her new friend is gone. Strangers fill the compartment, the conductor shrugs, and a carriage of respectable travelers lies straight to her face. The only one willing to take her seriously is the teasing musicologist Gilbert, played by Michael Redgrave. Together they search car after car, and behind the vanished old woman a spy plot surfaces on the eve of war.

Written by Sidney Gilliat and Frank Launder from Ethel Lina White's novel, it was Hitchcock's last big British hit and his ticket to Hollywood. The dry wit, two cricket-obsessed Englishmen and tight-corridor suspense are why audiences still return to it. Stream The Lady Vanishes (1938) online on iFILM.
