Synopsis

The Birds (1963) is Alfred Hitchcock's horror landmark, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Socialite Melanie Daniels follows lawyer Mitch Brenner to the sleepy coastal town of Bodega Bay. Then the sky turns against everyone.

It starts small. A gull clips Melanie on the head for no reason. Soon crows mass on the schoolyard fence, sparrows pour down a chimney, and the attacks grow lethal with no warning and no cause. Tippi Hedren plays the increasingly trapped Melanie, while Jessica Tandy is Mitch's wary mother, whose chill deepens the dread. Nobody ever explains why the birds turn on the town, and that silence does the real damage.

Hitchcock dropped the score entirely. Instead of music there is an electronic hum and shrieking wings built on a Trautonium, a choice that still unsettles audiences. The schoolyard sequence and the siege of the boarded-up farmhouse remain among the most copied scenes in the genre. Adapted from a Daphne du Maurier story, the film holds up as pure mechanical terror. Stream The Birds (1963) online on iFILM.
