Synopsis
Outlaw King (2018) is David Mackenzie's historical war film you can watch online on iFILM. Early 14th-century Scotland is under English rule, and one nobleman decides to fight back.
Chris Pine plays Robert the Bruce. The English think he is finished — he has sworn loyalty, surrendered his lands, gone quiet. Then he is crowned in secret and vanishes into the hills with a handful of followers. What follows is a guerrilla campaign against an army many times his size. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is the ferocious James Douglas; Florence Pugh plays Elizabeth, the wife whose marriage to a rebel turns her into a hostage. Shot across real Scottish moorland, the mud, rain and blood feel close enough to touch.
Mackenzie strips away the usual heroics. His Middle Ages are brutal, waterlogged and cramped, and the climactic clash at Loudoun Hill plays out with almost no editing tricks.
