Centuries ago, Doctor Parnassus won immortality in a wager with the Devil. The bill is now due: on her coming of age, his daughter Valentina is to be handed over. The only way out is one more bet — collect five souls before the Devil does. Then a charming stranger named Tony joins the troupe and the stakes spin out of control. Christopher Plummer plays Parnassus, Tom Waits the Devil, Lily Cole the daughter caught in between.

This was Heath Ledger's last film. He died mid-shoot, so Tony's faces beyond the mirror are finished by Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell, each taking a different reflection. A young Andrew Garfield rounds out the company. Gilliam, the old Monty Python hand, builds a hand-painted, deliberately theatrical dreamworld unlike anything else on screen.
