A swarm of locusts strips the Great Valley bare in a matter of days. The adult herd cannot agree on where to go next. While the grown-ups argue, Littlefoot leads Petrie, Cera, Ducky and Spike across the Big Water — and a sudden wave destroys the path behind them, stranding the group on an uncharted island. There is food here, but they are not alone. An old acquaintance turns up, and whether he counts as friend or threat is a question that drives the whole story.

The film marks the first time the series sends its young heroes off entirely on their own, separating them from the herd for most of the runtime.
