Synopsis

October Sky (1999) is a true-story drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Joe Johnston and starring Jake Gyllenhaal. The screenplay is drawn from Homer Hickam's memoir Rocket Boys.

It's the autumn of 1957 in Coalwood, West Virginia — a company town where the mine is the only real employer and the only expected future for its sons. Then a small glowing dot crosses the sky: Sputnik. Teenager Homer Hickam decides to build his own rocket. Three friends join him. Their chemistry teacher, played by Laura Dern, quietly backs them up. Homer's father, a veteran miner embodied by Chris Cooper, sees rocketry as a dead end and the coal pit as the only honest answer.

What follows is a record of actual failures and hard-won small victories — a forest fire blamed on the wrong rocket, a national science fair, and a path that eventually led Hickam to a career as a NASA engineer. Johnston keeps the film grounded in the specifics of a working-class community rather than reaching for easy inspiration. Stream October Sky online on iFILM.
