It plays out in Judea under Roman rule. The fisherman Simon is buried in debt, the tax collector Matthew lives as an outcast among his own, and a woman named Mary wrestles with a past the strange teacher frees her from. The show is in no rush to reach the miracles — it shows tired, fully human people whom an encounter with the preacher shakes out of their ordinary lives.
