Synopsis
Shadows (1960) is John Cassavetes' debut feature — watch online on iFILM. Shot on 16mm in Manhattan with a few thousand dollars raised by friends, no studio backing and no conventional script, it became the founding text of American independent cinema. The method shows in every frame: actors caught mid-thought, streets still warm from the day, jazz bleeding through the walls.
Three siblings navigate New York at the close of the fifties. Hugh is a Black trumpet player, visibly so, watching doors close in front of him at every gig. His younger brother Ben and sister Lelia pass as white without much effort and move through a different city entirely. When Lelia falls for Tony — a white guy from the art crowd — things hold together until Tony meets Hugh and does the math.
Shown at Venice and studied in film schools ever since, Shadows set the template for improvisation-based drama that runs through half a century of independent American filmmaking. Stream Shadows (1960) in full online on iFILM.
