Synopsis
Heaven & Earth (1993) — watch online on iFILM: Oliver Stone's closing chapter in his Vietnam trilogy, following Platoon and Born on the Fourth of July. Hiep Thi Le plays Le Ly, Tommy Lee Jones co-stars as Sergeant Steve Butler, with Joan Chen and Haing S. Ngor in supporting roles. The 140-minute film draws on two memoirs Le Ly Hayslip wrote about her own life.
Le Ly grows up in a rice-farming village when the war turns her world into a battlefield. She is beaten, imprisoned, and assaulted by multiple factions — then flees to Saigon, where survival takes other forms. A chance encounter with a Marine offers passage to California. America, it turns out, has its own ways of breaking people, and Steve carries wounds from the same war that shaped her differently.
Stone shot on location in Thailand and Vietnam, with cinematographer Robert Richardson turning the lush rural landscape into a quiet indictment of what was lost there. Stream Heaven & Earth (1993) online on iFILM.
