Synopsis
Innocent Voices (Voces inocentes, 2005) is a Mexican war drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Luis Mandoki adapted the autobiographical screenplay by Óscar Torres, who wrote from his own childhood in El Salvador. Carlos Padilla plays the lead.
El Salvador, early 1980s. Eleven-year-old Chava lives with his mother and siblings in a town where neither the army nor the guerrillas stop for the night. Gunfire is background noise. The clock ticking over Chava's head is specific: boys are conscripted the moment they turn twelve. He has less than a year. He goes to school, develops a crush, flies paper lanterns — and keeps hearing that another classmate is gone.
The film was co-produced by Mexican and Puerto Rican studios and collected several Latin American film awards. Leonor Varela plays Chava's mother, holding the household together with quiet, worn-down resolve.
