Synopsis
Sordo (The (Silent) War, 2019) is a Spanish war thriller directed by Alfonso Cortés-Cavanillas — watch it online on iFILM. October 1944, northern Spain: scattered bands of exiled Republican soldiers cross the Pyrenees back into a country that has spent years under Franco. Their plan is to ignite a popular uprising from inside.
The cast is led by Asier Etxeandia and Marian Álvarez. What makes the film tense is silence itself — in the mountains, a misplaced sound is a death sentence, and the guerrillas can barely trust each other, let alone the locals. Director Cortés-Cavanillas keeps the action sparse and deliberate, building dread out of pauses and glances rather than shootouts.
The film draws on a rarely told episode from Spain's postwar resistance, the failed Reconquista de España operation. A quiet, precise piece of historical cinema for viewers who don't need explosions to feel the danger. Stream The (Silent) War (2019) online on iFILM.
