Synopsis
Crime Wave (1953) is an American film noir directed by André de Toth — stream it online on iFILM. Sterling Hayden plays a hard-edged detective, Gene Nelson plays Steve Lacey, a reformed ex-con trying to stay clean, and an early Charles Bronson shows up in a supporting role.
Steve is on parole and keeping his head down. Then a wounded former cellmate knocks on his door in the middle of the night. Two more arrive shortly after and give Steve no good options: help them rob a bank, or get handed to the cops as an accomplice. Detective Sonders doesn't believe a word Steve says about being innocent — and Hayden plays that certainty as something close to menace.
At 73 minutes, de Toth doesn't waste a frame. The film was shot on actual Los Angeles locations, the lighting is unforgiving, and there's nothing glamorous about anyone's choices. For a 1950s noir, Crime Wave has aged cleanly — it's tight, cold, and refuses to sentimentalize. Watch Crime Wave (1953) online on iFILM.
