Synopsis

Jem and the Holograms (2015) — watch online on iFILM. Director Jon M. Chu's music drama is a loose live-action reimagining of the 1980s animated series, with Molly Ringwald and Juliette Lewis in supporting roles alongside a cast of younger leads including Stefanie Scott and Hayley Kiyoko.

Jerrica is a shy girl from a small town who sings for no one. Her sister secretly films one of her performances and posts it overnight — by morning, it has millions of views. A major label comes calling within days. Jerrica becomes Jem: polished, public-facing, and increasingly unrecognizable to herself. Her three sisters come along to Los Angeles, but the further they travel from home, the more the cracks show. Woven through the pop-star rise is a mystery her late father left behind, and it pulls her in a quieter direction than the spotlight.

Jon M. Chu went on to direct Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights. Here he aimed for emotional sincerity over spectacle. The film underperformed at the box office in 2015 but developed a more appreciative audience on streaming. Stream Jem and the Holograms online on iFILM.
