Synopsis
Heavy Metal (1981) is an adult animated anthology you can watch online on iFILM. A Canadian-American film drawn from the cult fantasy magazine, mixing science fiction, eroticism and horror.
Everything hangs on a glowing green orb called the Loc-Nar, which names itself the sum of all evil. It corners a young girl and tells her story after story of the worlds it has poisoned: a cabbie in a neon future New York, a scrawny teenager flung onto a barbarian planet, a soldier turned to a zombie, and the warrior Taarna for the finale. The segments share no plot, only the Loc-Nar.
The film was made by several animation studios and roughly ten directors working in parallel. It grew out of Heavy Metal magazine and runs on a wall of period rock: Black Sabbath, Blue Öyster Cult, Devo, Cheap Trick. Future SCTV stars voiced it, among them John Candy, Harold Ramis and Eugene Levy. For years music rights kept it nearly impossible to see. Stream Heavy Metal (1981) online on iFILM.
