The school they're trapped in mirrors the real Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys, a facility whose decades of documented abuse against children only came fully to light after investigators began excavating its grounds in the 2010s.

Ross shoots the film from a first-person perspective, placing the camera where the characters' eyes would be — an approach that turns watching into something closer to witnessing.
