Retired businessman Michael Kingsley is telling his granddaughter a story he has kept close for decades. As a boy he lived with his reclusive father along a desolate stretch of South Australian coastline, far from towns and classrooms. One day he found three orphaned pelican chicks. Two didn't make it. The third became Mr. Percival. What followed was a friendship between a lonely child and a wild bird — and a loss that never quite healed.

The film adapts Colin Thiele's 1964 novella, a school-curriculum staple across Australia. Director Shawn Seet frames it as a present-day story told in memory, keeping the heart of the original: how a single bond in childhood can shape everything that comes after.
