Black Panther

To outsiders, Wakanda looks like a poor farming country. In truth it sits on vibranium, the metal that powers technology centuries ahead of anywhere else, and for generations the kingdom has kept that secret buried. Then the past walks back in. Erik Killmonger, an outsider with Wakandan blood and a personal claim to the crown, forces T'Challa to ask an uncomfortable question: what does a king owe the world beyond his borders? The villain has a point, and that's what makes him hard to fight.

Chadwick Boseman plays the warrior king; Michael B. Jordan plays a rival you almost root for. The cast also includes Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira leading the all-female Dora Milaje, and Martin Freeman. Across 134 minutes you get ritual combat at the falls, a chase through Busan, and an Oscar-winning score. It became the first Marvel film nominated for Best Picture.
