Pain & Gain

Pain & Gain (2013) is Michael Bay's crime comedy, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It pulls from a real Miami case that reads like fiction: bodybuilders who tried to muscle their way to riches.

Daniel Lugo (Mark Wahlberg) runs the floor at Sun Gym and figures the American dream owes him a payout. His scheme is brutally dumb — kidnap wealthy client Victor Kershaw and force him to sign over everything he owns. Lugo drags in two partners: jittery, juiced-up Adrian (Anthony Mackie) and Paul Doyle (Dwayne Johnson), a born-again ex-con who keeps trying to stay clean and keeps failing. They have plenty of muscle. Brains, not so much, and every step of the plan curdles into bloody farce.

Coming straight off the Transformers machine, Bay delivered a meaner, stranger satire here — a story about greed swallowing whatever conscience these guys had left.
