Army virologist Colonel Sam Daniels (Dustin Hoffman) is sent to a small California town where the disease kills in hours. The only cure is a serum drawn from the first host, a monkey that has vanished. Daniels' problem runs deeper than the bug: his superiors, Generals Ford and McClintock (Morgan Freeman and Donald Sutherland), have known about the strain for years and would rather firebomb the town than admit it. Rene Russo, Kevin Spacey, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Patrick Dempsey fill out the ensemble.

Petersen stages the film as a race against the clock, cutting between helicopter chases and cold scenes inside biosafety level 4 labs.
