Reeves moved John Ajvide Lindqvist's novel onto American ground, a story Swedish audiences already knew from Let the Right One In. There are almost no cheap scares here. Snow, loneliness and sudden, childlike cruelty are measured out until ordinary moments turn frightening. Richard Jenkins plays the guardian whose devotion unsettles as much as any fangs.
