Synopsis
Daughters of the Dust (1991) is a landmark American drama directed by Julie Dash — watch it online on iFILM. The first theatrically released feature by an African American woman, it unfolds in 1902 on the Sea Islands off the coast of South Carolina. The Peazant family is preparing to leave for the mainland. Some are ready to go. Others refuse to leave behind everything they've kept alive.
The film moves inside the Gullah culture — descendants of enslaved Africans who preserved their language, rituals, and spiritual practices across generations of isolation. Cinematographer Arthur Jafa shot it like a painting in motion: slow water, white linen, the voices of the unborn narrating from somewhere outside of time.
Beyoncé cited this film as a direct influence on Lemonade, and you can feel it. Dash structures the narrative the way memory works — layered, non-linear, without apology. Stream Daughters of the Dust (1991) online on iFILM.
