About

Synopsis

A Very Long Engagement (Un long dimanche de fiançailles, 2004) is a wartime romance from Jean-Pierre Jeunet that you can watch online on iFILM. The Great War is over, yet Mathilde refuses to accept that her fiancé is dead.

Manech and four other soldiers were court-martialled for self-inflicted wounds and pushed out into no man's land, left between the trenches for enemy or friendly fire to finish them off. No bodies came back. Mathilde, who has walked with a limp since childhood, turns detective: letters, a hired investigator, the testimony of survivors, each scrap rebuilding what happened that night in a trench nicknamed Bingo. Audrey Tautou plays stubbornness that outlasts every proof. Around her are Gaspard Ulliel, Marion Cotillard, Jodie Foster and Denis Lavant.

Jeunet brings the same warm, slightly fairy-tale eye he used in Amélie, only here the camera turns toward mud-filled trenches and the quiet grief of rural France. The film took five César Awards and two Oscar nominations for its cinematography and art direction. Stream A Very Long Engagement (2004) online on iFILM.
