Culinary student Jack Tripper needs a place to live. He wakes up in a stranger's bathtub after a party and somehow ends up with a room in a Santa Monica apartment shared by two women, Janet and Chrissy. The landlord, Mr. Roper, would never agree — so Jack passes himself off as gay, the roommates play along, and the arrangement holds together by a thread every single episode.

The comedy runs on misunderstanding: overheard half-sentences, wrong doors at the wrong moment and a cast of supporting characters who always draw the worst possible conclusions.
