Synopsis
Jane Eyre (2011) is Cary Fukunaga's adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's novel, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A British-American drama starring Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender, 120 minutes.
Raised without affection, an orphaned young woman takes a governess post at gloomy Thornfield Hall and a small French girl, Adèle, in her care. The master of the house turns up rarely and speaks in sharp bursts, yet something honest grows between him and the quiet Jane — two equals, rank set aside. Fassbender plays Rochester as a man gnawed by something he won't name, while Wasikowska refuses to make Jane meek, giving her a spine and a moral line she won't cross. Strange sounds carry through the corridors at night, and behind them sits a secret that could wreck whatever happiness she's found.
Fukunaga drops the straight chronology and lets the story surface in memory as a soaked Jane bangs on a stranger's door across the moors. Cinematographer Adriano Goldman shot by candlelight and pale daylight, leaving Yorkshire looking genuinely cold to the touch. The cast also includes Judi Dench, Jamie Bell and Sally Hawkins.
