At first it plays like a stupid prank: the hostage gets dragged to parties, handed beers, introduced to girls. Bruce Willis appears as Johnny's father, Justin Timberlake as the one member of the gang with a conscience, with Amanda Seyfried and Ben Foster among those who stay silent until it's too late.

The script draws on a notorious late-'90s case — a young dealer who landed on the FBI's most-wanted list. Cassavetes skips the trial and the chase and zeroes in on the three days when dozens of witnesses saw what was happening and nobody stepped in.
