Synopsis

The English Patient (1996) is Anthony Minghella's wartime romance, and you can watch it online on iFILM. As World War II winds down, a Canadian nurse abandons her unit to care for a badly burned man with no name and no memory in a ruined Italian villa.

Ralph Fiennes plays the patient. His body barely moves, yet his mind keeps slipping back to the pre-war Sahara, where Hungarian mapmaker Count Almásy fell for Katharine, the wife of a British colleague. Kristin Scott Thomas plays her; Juliette Binoche plays nurse Hana. Around them circle a thief named Caravaggio missing his thumbs (Willem Dafoe) and Kip, a Sikh sapper defusing bombs (Naveen Andrews). Two timelines drift toward the same wound.

Minghella adapted the script from Michael Ondaatje's Booker Prize novel. The film took nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, with Binoche winning for her supporting role. John Seale shot the desert; Gabriel Yared wrote the score. Stream The English Patient (1996) online on iFILM.
