Rocky Balboa trades punches in cheap club bouts and collects debts for a neighborhood loan shark to scrape by. He's thirty, broke, and out of chances, throwing his combinations at frozen carcasses in a meatpacking plant. Then heavyweight champion Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) picks an unknown for a title fight as a publicity gimmick, and the unknown is him. Rocky doesn't expect to win. He just wants to still be standing after fifteen rounds, to prove to himself he was never a bum.

Stallone wrote the screenplay in a matter of days and refused to sell it unless he starred. Shot for under a million dollars, the film became a global hit and won the Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Editing. Around Rocky stand shy Adrian (Talia Shire), her bitter brother Paulie (Burt Young), and grizzled trainer Mickey (Burgess Meredith), who writes him off before he believes.
