Synopsis
The Cement Garden (1993) is a cold, unsettling British drama directed by Andrew Birkin, adapted from Ian McEwan's novel — watch it online on iFILM. When their mother falls ill and dies, four siblings decide to hide her body in the basement under cement rather than alert the authorities. The eldest, Julie and Jack, become the reluctant heads of a household sealed off from the outside world.
Each child retreats into their own response. Youngest Tom starts dressing as a girl. Sue pours everything into her diary. Jack fixates on his own body, restless and confused. And Julie's new boyfriend Derek begins to notice that something is very wrong in the house. Charlotte Gainsbourg and Andrew Robertson play these roles with an unsettling naturalness that makes the film harder to shake than any horror.
Birkin's adaptation keeps McEwan's airless claustrophobia intact. This is not a film that punishes its characters loudly — it watches them quietly. Stream The Cement Garden (1993) online on iFILM.
