Synopsis
Made in Britain (1983) is a British TV drama directed by Alan Clarke, available to watch online on iFILM. Trevor is a teenage skinhead — shaved head, swastika tattoo, and a flat refusal to do what anyone tells him. This was Tim Roth's screen debut at around 22 years old, and the performance he delivers here is why the film keeps showing up in writing about British social cinema forty years later.
Trevor gets referred to an assessment centre — one last stop before the courts decide what to do with him. The social worker assigned to his case actually tries. Trevor listens, nods, and then does exactly what he intended to do all along. Not because he's stupid. Because he's decided. Clarke shot in long, unbroken takes, forcing Roth to carry entire scenes without a cut to hide behind. The screenplay was written by David Leland, who later wrote Wish You Were Here.
The film doesn't explain Trevor or ask you to like him — it just watches him. He sees through every rule and every offer of help, and he's right that they're mostly hollow, even if his way out leads nowhere. Seventy-six minutes that feel closer to a confrontation than a story.
